Buzzmuscle will perform its first Chicago headlining show Saturday at Lounge Ax with Atlanta's Jackonuts. The band's new EP on the Perishable label features the songs "12 Step" and "Comedian," off their forthcoming, full-length "Stayeth" album (tentative release date: Aug. The disc itself pictures a slab of bacon. The sleeve of the group's first single, "Assembler"/"33 Degrees" looks precisely like a package of Oscar Meyer bacon. If everybody's comfortable with where it was unconsciously lifted from, then we go ahead with it." I had never played with anybody but my turntable." Warmowski describes the band's approach to songwriting: "If somebody comes up with a riff or an idea, it's like a contest to see who can shoot it down fastest, who can identify it's origins the quickest.

I had basically just been sitting in my room strumming around to Buzzcocks and Naked Raygun records for four years. He describes the Buzzmuscle sounds as "Pretty much guitar-as-wall and rhythm-as-tool-as an actual instrument." Dunlap recalls, "I had been playing guitar for years and never imagined that I would actually do it in public one day. Warmowski cites Naked Raygun, Big Black and the Effigies as central influences. Schleitwiler, drums-leans to the melodic, song-based side of Chicago hardcore. Although there was stiff competition for the right to shoot the "Sister Havana" clip, the band decided to stick with TV Eye. Directing credit goes to TV Eye partners Paul Andresen and George Dougherty, who previously co-produced and directed Urge's "The Kids Are Insane" and "The Candidate" videos from the "Supersonic Storybook" album on Touch and Go. The video was shot in Miami and features the band cruising the beach in a 1972 Cadillac convertible, performing in the lobby of a decrepit Cuban hotel and skimming southern waters in a high-speed air boat. Sadly, much of Saturation wasn't up to the standards of the leadoff track, and Urge Overkill's next album, Exit the Dragon, would bring the group to a disastrous halt, but thanks to "Sister Havana," for three minutes and 49 seconds the most glamorous band in indie rock finally sounded like the rock stars they always wanted to be (and if the song's initially strong airplay hadn't petered out, it might have made them stars, which would have made Exit the Dragon even more problematic).Chicago's TV Eye Film just finished shooting the video for Urge Overkill's soon-to-be-released "Sister Havana" single for Geffen Records. Elsewhere, guitarist Eddie "King" Rouser is in rare form, laying down superb leads and chunky rhythm parts, and producers the Butcher Brothers give the track the thick and glossy analog varnish this band always needed. "Sister Havana"'s lyrics relate a typically improbable tale of the band's adventures with a beautiful woman in Cuba (where they spied her making out with Fidel Castro, no less), but Nash Kato sings them with enough mock sincerity that it almost passes for the real thing on the verses, and once he hits the chorus (which is dumb, but dumb in a truly inspired way), he's transformed himself into the rock belter he's always wanted to be. Urge Overkill spent much of their career veering between a smart-assed parody of '70s hard rock and a loving tribute to the same, but "Sister Havana," from their 1993 major-label debut, Saturation, was one of the rare moments where both sides of their personality came together with the perfection of yin and yang.
